Convoy Power Cores

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

The Convoy Power Cores are the Convoy’s central reserve of magical energy and the physical link between its engine car, defensive enchantments, and aether cannons. Their importance becomes clear when a level-1200 Ghul-Feather tears the engine car away from the train: the Convoy’s weapons are not merely damaged but effectively deprived of power, leaving the stranded passengers exposed in the Emberblade Fields. Recovering and redeploying two cores turns the cores from hidden infrastructure into the decisive instruments of survival.

Definition and Arrangement

Inside the Convoy’s engine car, eight brilliant white orbs sit at the center of dense artificing lines. The magical markings cover both walls, radiate across the car, and would have continued through the rest of the train had the carriage not been ripped away. The room’s physical design is comparatively plain, but its compact arrangement conceals monumental engineering. Saffra recognizes that artificing resembles enchanting because both use a language related to spellcraft, yet she cannot read the system’s technical pattern well enough to understand it at a glance.

The cores are powerful enough to make the engine car hum with magic so intensely that Saffra’s teeth ache, a reaction made notable by her two years at the Institute. Their brilliance is therefore not decorative: it registers the active magical burden of the Convoy and the extraordinary energy being routed through its systems. When two cores are deactivated, the remaining six glow brighter, showing that the array compensates for the loss rather than functioning as eight unrelated lamps.

Failure During the Convoy Attack

The cores become vulnerable when the Ghul-Feather, a two-headed crow the size of a building, drags the engine car away in its talons. The monster cannot lift its prize fully, partly because the car is too heavy and partly because defensive enchantments still protect it, but the separation is enough to disable the Convoy’s normal defenses. A silver-rank adventurer identifies the crucial weakness: the power cores are in the engine car, and without that car the aether cannons are largely useless.

The cannons can still produce enough power to handle some mithril-level monsters and weaker threats, but they cannot reliably confront the higher-tier danger attacking the Convoy. The passengers had assumed that the cannons could deal with threats beyond Titled rank; the removal of the engine car reveals that the entire defensive network has an obvious single point of failure. The cores thus expose an institutional vulnerability in a system advertised as the safest and fastest way to travel through the Kingdoms.

Emergency Redeployment

The Convoy does contain a contingency for the separation of the engine car and the train. Emergency power slots are located elsewhere, including in the Lounge, specifically for a break in the link between the engine car and the rest of the Convoy. The existence of these sockets gives the cores a second function: they are not only fixed components of the engine array but portable units that can be moved into a backup circuit.

Saffra reaches the engine car only because defensive spells placed on her by Vivi make her effectively untouchable to the Ghul-Feather. The monster’s enormous talons slip across a prismatic barrier, and Saffra’s trembling bluff with her wand drives it away long enough for her to board the car. She finds two engineers inside, one bald and spectacled and the other short, hairy, and musclebound, and explains that the level-1200 undead creature has severed the engine from the Convoy while monsters are already beginning to swarm.

The engineers tell her that the emergency procedure must be performed in an exact order. In the Lounge, she must tear up the carpet, place the cores in the sockets in the floor, and pull the lever; the system has no safety mechanisms. One engineer immediately deactivates two cores for her, changing them from brilliant white to dull gray while the remaining six brighten in response. The cores are heavier than they appear, and Saffra nearly drops them while carrying them back through the danger outside.

Restoration of the Convoy’s Defenses

A White Glove helps Saffra open the iron hatch to the emergency compartment. The compartment contains eight slots and a metal face covered with artificing lines like those in the engine car. As the two gray cores approach, an invisible force pulls them from Saffra’s hands and seats them with heavy thunks. She then pulls the lever.

The Convoy shudders as mana surges through the system. The gray orbs turn white again and hum while energy is expelled downward and through the train. In that instant, the cores cease to be inert salvage and become an active current running through the Convoy’s defensive infrastructure. Their reintegration restores the power needed to bring the aether cannons back online and allows the stranded train to defend itself against the approaching swarm.

The operation is unexpectedly easy once Saffra has reached the correct machinery, though the exertion leaves her exhausted. She releases the mana sustaining her ice wall, lets the construct melt, and reports the result to Lord Caldimore: the Ghul-Feather removed the engine car, the loss deactivated the cannons, and she retrieved the cores to give the Convoy a way to defend itself. Lord Caldimore is shocked not only by the monster’s level but by the fact that she successfully recovered the cores at all.

Material and Narrative Significance

The Convoy Power Cores embody the difference between visible safety and concealed dependence. From outside, the Convoy appears to possess formidable defenses; only the attack reveals that those defenses depend on eight compact orbs housed in a single detachable car. Their failure makes the train’s technological sophistication appear fragile, while their emergency redeployment demonstrates that the same infrastructure contains a practical but dangerous means of recovery.

They also function as active participants in the crisis rather than passive equipment. The Ghul-Feather’s attack changes their position, the engineers’ intervention changes their state from active to inert, and the emergency sockets redirect their energy into a damaged system. Saffra’s action matters, but survival depends on an assemblage of monster, train, artificing lines, engineers, defensive magic, and cores whose material properties determine what can be done. The cores convert a stranded convoy from a powerless target into a functioning defensive platform, making their recovery the technical and dramatic hinge of the episode.
